What are stair nosings and why are they needed?

Stair nosings are protective edging profiles fitted to the leading edge of stair treads. They protect the stair edge from wear and provide a visual contrast and anti-slip surface to reduce slip and trip accidents. Building Regulations Approved Document K and BS 8300 require contrasting nosings in public and commercial buildings.

What materials are stair nosings available in?

Stair nosings are available in aluminium (lightweight, corrosion resistant), PVC (flexible, cost-effective), rubber inserts (maximum grip) and stainless steel (hygienic, heavy-duty). Most aluminium nosings accept replaceable rubber or PVC inserts.

Do stair nosings comply with building regulations?

Our stair nosings meet the requirements of UK Building Regulations Approved Document K and BS 8300:2018. Compliant nosings provide tonal contrast (minimum 30 LRV difference from the stair tread) and cover the full width of the tread.

How are stair nosings fitted?

Stair nosings are fixed using countersunk screws into pre-drilled holes in the stair tread, or with proprietary adhesive. The profile should be positioned with the front edge flush with the face of the riser.

What is the difference between a stair nosing and a threshold strip?

A stair nosing is fitted to the leading edge of each stair tread on a staircase. A threshold strip is fitted at floor level to bridge the junction between two different flooring surfaces or at a doorway.
