How much entrance matting do I need to remove dirt from shoes?

Research shows that 80% of dirt entering a building is carried in on footwear. To remove this effectively you need at least 3-4 footsteps of matting — approximately 1.5 to 2 metres of matting length. For high-footfall entrances such as schools and retail, 3 metres is recommended.

What is the difference between coir matting and barrier matting?

Coir matting is made from natural coconut fibre and excels at scraping mud and debris from outdoor footwear. It is biodegradable and works best at external or covered entrances. Barrier matting has a synthetic pile surface bonded to a rubber or vinyl backing — it absorbs moisture effectively and suits indoor transition zones and office lobbies.

What standard covers entrance matting slip resistance?

BS 7953:1999 is the British Standard covering the selection and installation of entrance matting. It classifies mats by location (external, transitional, internal) and recommends minimum pendulum slip resistance values. Can entrance matting be cut to a custom size?

Yes, our coir matting rolls and barrier matting are available in standard widths (0.9m, 1m, 1.2m, 1.5m, 2m) and can be cut to any length. We can also supply mats cut to fit recessed mat wells — contact us with your dimensions.

How do I clean commercial entrance mats?

Coir mats should be shaken or vacuumed regularly and hosed down periodically, then allowed to dry fully. Barrier matting can be vacuumed, spot cleaned or machine washed (up to 30°C). Avoid leaving mats permanently wet as this degrades the backing.
